CDS Energy Services Recruits More Apprentices to Build Future Capacity

We are giving our latest intern of three apprentices a chance to gain the skills they need to enter our specialist engineering trades, reinforcing our commitment to training young people for work across the UK and overseas.

CDS Energy Services (CDS), headquartered in Yorkshire, has a long and proud history of developing young people and currently has 10 people working across the organisation in various apprenticeship capacities – the largest number since we began trading.

Callum Fletchers, Charlie Morrill and James Jenkinson all joined CDS in September and will complete three-year apprenticeships to forge a career in the energy services industry.

Danny Laybourne, a director at CDS, said the news is a further sign of our commitment to nurturing young talent.

“We have been fortunate enough to develop some fantastic people via our apprenticeship scheme over the years. Nurturing and developing our people from an early age has helped us to build capacity whilst offering a clear career path and fulfilling roles for all participants. I am looking forward to seeing Callum, Charlie and James developing their skills with us.

“Our region has a fantastic opportunity to become the UK’s leading area for energy skills and we want to ensure we are doing all we can to make this happen.

“Our investment into our apprenticeship programme and the business as whole reinforces our desire and commitment to grow stronger from within – creating tomorrow’s leaders, today.”

As part of their apprenticeship programmes to become pipe fitters, Callum and Charlie will attend college on day release as well as working at our headquarters while trainee welder James will attend industry training centre CATCH in Stallingborough, North Lincolnshire, full-time for one year before completing a further two years with us.

The announcement comes as we are on the verge of completing our second major expansion in less than four years as our order book continues to grow.

Construction work began earlier this year on a new 10,000-square-feet state-of-the-art fabrication facility, which will see operational space increase by 30 per cent.

It will feature two 10-tonne overhead cranes, office space, toilets, canteen and a new security office giving its 24-hour security team the facilities it requires.

The development comes hot on the heels of the opening of our original factory in 2010.

Mr Laybourne continued: “This is a very exciting time for everyone at CDS and I am looking forward to building on our success over the next 12 months and beyond with our new apprentices.”

Energy industry expert joins CDS to boost business

CDS has appointed an industry heavyweight in a bid to strengthen our position in the sector as we look to continue our rapid growth.

We have enjoyed huge success since opening our factory in the city in 2010 and are currently undergoing a major expansion in order increase operational capacity.

In order to continue our development and secure more work across the energy industry, we have employed Glenn Sibbick as our Business Development Director.

With more than 40 years’ experience of working in oil and gas across the globe for industry giants such as Exon, Total, Hamilton Oil, BHPP and Centrica, Glenn returned to the Humber to play his part in ensuring the region reaches its potential.

He said: “I am passionate about this area and I am passionate about this industry. The Humber region has more capability and more capacity than people think. You only have to look at the developments that are going on both banks of the river to realise that.

“From working for clients for many of years, I am now on the service delivery side of the fence in a business development role and I am looking forward to helping CDS secure its amazing growth.

“I have worked for a number of industry heavyweights all over the world but my decision to join CDS and stay within this region where I was born and grew up was two-fold. CDS is a very forward-thinking company – if it sees and understands a problem, it responds positively in researching and finding solutions which eventually will turn into both supply chain improvements with added commercial opportunities. In larger companies that vision is sometimes lost.

“It is also a company that is willing to take steps to bridge the skills gap in this region and develop a model of best practice for business in the energy industry. It is clearly progressive in recruiting apprentices beyond the industry expected ratio which it sees as a critical factor in its own develop for the future capability and capacity.

“As I am very passionate about skills and employment for the local region and this sits very comfortable with me. CDS’s workshop is full to capacity at the minute because people believe in what CDS is delivering.”

Glenn has previously worked as a Director of Operations and a Director of Major Projects at Centrica, As Engineering, Maintenance Manager and senior offshore installation manager at BHP Petroleum and as managing director at Optis Europe Ltd.

He has gone on to sit on the Humber LEP Employment and Skills Board, the Regional Growth Funding governance board and is chair of the North East Lincolnshire Development & Growth Employment and Skills Board.

Glenn is also an honorary fellow of the Institute of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH). Honorary fellowships are awarded to people who have “contributed to the theory or practice of health and safety in a distinguished way”.

Having settled back in the Humber region after being born in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, Glenn is determined to work with CDS to eradicate some of the industry problems that he has experienced across the globe.

“My role here is to explore new opportunities for the company and develop CDS into an industry leader. But there is also a huge opportunity for CDS to make a dramatic change to the way the industry client and supply chain work,” he said.

“Many companies face problems in extending the life of their facilities at a reasonable cost through brownfield engineering and finding solutions to those are not easy. CDS is in a fantastic position to be able to offer a credible value adding solution to that. It is small enough to be innovative and nimble but has the drive skills and expertise to be able to deliver on its promises.

“I am really excited about the future of CDS and the future of this region. With the right direction, the Humber will become a centre of excellence and at the forefront of the world’s energy industry and CDS could lead that.”

Work begins on second major expansion in four years at CDS Energy Services

CDS is undergoing its second major expansion in less than four years as its order book continues to grow.

Construction work has begun on a new 10,000-square-feet state-of-the-art fabrication facility at our site in Burma Drive, Hull, which will see our operational space increase by another 30 per cent.

It will feature two 10-tonne overhead cranes, office space, toilets, canteen and a new security office giving its 24-hour security team the facilities it requires.

The development comes hot on the heels of the opening of our original factory in 2010.

Danny Laybourne, commercial director at CDS, says the rapid expansion is being fuelled by an increasing work load that has led to the existing workshop running at near capacity.

“We have reached a stage now where we have to be forward thinking with how we work because of the amount of orders that are coming in. This expansion is vital in ensuring we can maintain our future workload and continue to deliver the high level of service we currently do to our customers,” he said.

“To be in a position to expand so dramatically just four years after we opened our original factory is fantastic. It shows the work we are doing here is valued by existing and new clients and the extra operational space will allow us to continue to grow.

“Once complete, the building will complement our existing facilities of four fabrication workshops, five overhead cranes, a cut shed, hydro test shed, stores, 6,000sq ft of office space, mess facilities and two acres of hard standing.”

CDS, which supplies both greenfield and brownfield project services including project management and engineering solutions to the whole energy industry, has worked closely with sub-contractors and construction is set to be completed by the end of September.

The news comes just three months after we announced we had secured a major contract to replace two flare stacks and a bridge on the Tyra East and Tyra West platforms in the Danish sector of the North Sea, work which has created 130 jobs.

Mr Laybourne said: “Creating local jobs for young people looking to take their first steps into the industry is something we are very conscious of. We are using local labor to build the new facility and we will be creating further new jobs for people across the Humber region when it becomes operational.”

CDS set to create 130 new jobs after securing a major North Sea contract

A major new North Sea contract has been won by Hull-based offshore specialists CDS, which will see the creation of 130 new jobs.

The contract, which will involve the replacement of two flare stacks and a bridge on the Tyra East and Tyra West platforms in the Danish sector of the North Sea, is a major coup for us.

We faced competition from across Europe but our flexible approach and ability to work to a demanding programme were critical factors in our favour.

Howard Laybourne, managing director at CDS Energy Services, said: “This is a major new win for CDS, strengthening our reputation for providing cost-effective and innovative offshore solutions. After the brilliant news from Siemens this is a further indication that Hull and its locally-based companies can be competitive in the world energy sector.

“The project is technically demanding. It will involve five months of planning prior to the delivery stage which will have to be completed within a very short shut-down period.

“CDS is delighted to win such a prestigious contract and to be able to create so many new jobs across a variety of skill sectors, giving the local economy a real boost as our preference is to utilise skilled local labour.”

We are one of the leading companies in our field, not just in the UK but in Europe.

Based in east Hull, in close proximity to the docks, CDS supplies project management and engineering solutions to the oil, gas, petro-chemical and renewables industries. We fought off major European competition to secure the new contract in the Danish sector of the North Sea, 120 miles offshore.

The new contract will create 25 new positions for CDS within our engineering and management departments both onshore and offshore and there will also be 105 new jobs for pipe fitters, coded welders, platers, riggers and mechanical fitters.

“The benefit of having local highly-trained offshore personnel is that their skills are easily transferable to the wind energy market. This means that local companies will be well-placed to pick up business from the offshore wind sector as well,” said Mr Laybourne.

We will provide a range of services as part of the work including pre-planning, project management, detailed offshore site survey, offshore replacement of flare towers, specialist welding and safety reviews.

CDS is based at a large, state-of-the-art facility in the east of the city and we pride ourselves on engaging local suppliers and we have a successful track record of providing innovative engineering solutions, consistently meeting international standards.

CDS rebrands and launches new website

Leading fabrication solutions and project management company CDS has rebranded as CDS Energy Services and launched a new website.

“We have chosen to rebrand to recognise the fact that our operations have broadened in scope”.

“Our state of the art facilities and location next to the River Humber means that we have started to pick up some large contracts in the offshore wind industry” said director Danny Laybourne.

“The new name more accurately reflects the expanding nature of our business. Whilst we continue to thrive in the oil, gas and petro-chemical industries, our growing portfolio of wind and biomass clients means that the new name more accurately reflects the nature of our business.”

CDS has also launched a new website to promote the broadened scope of work currently being undertaken. Developed by Mercury, the site has been produced to the latest responsive design standards so that it will adapt to maximise visibility on PCs, tablets or phones.
